Buying a car out of state?

Postby NewmansKnight on Fri Mar 05, 2010 2:37 am

How do I register a car in Tennessee that I may purchase from a seller in Kentucky? How do I change the title over (it is represented as being clean) ? Is there anything I need to do special? Which state will I need to pay the taxes to?

Need answers ASAP. Thanks, guys.

Every state has different laws. I've done the reverse and bought a few from Tennessee. In Kentucky, you have to have a title (no bill of sale allowed), no rebuilt titles allowed either (unless you plan on rebuilding the car, sending receipts, photos, and a pint of your blood to Frankfort to get a "working" title for registration). The title has to be notarized, if you buy from a dealer, the invoice has to be notarized as well as the title. The invoice and/or title must show the value paid for the car (for taxes). You have to have proof of insurance on the vehicle before you even go to the courthouse. You have to stand on your head and sing "I'm a little TeaPot." You have to take out every lady that works at the courthouse to lunch, and you'll need to mow their lawn for the next year. You also have to have a sherrif inspection. If you have a lien on the vehicle (ie loan), you will need to present that info as well so that it can appear on the title. That about covers it for Kentucky for a vehicle out of state. I don't know about Tennessee though. Every state has it's little rules. You will have to call your local office to find out more, but that gives you an idea of the hoops you have to jump through to get one from Tennessee to Kentucky.

WOW,

All I did when I bought an out of state car is bring the title given to me along with filling out the
regular registration paperwork and my proof of insurance. That's it. They took the old title (like they
always do) and sent me a new one at a later date. Along as the emissions was up to date, every
thing else was a breeze.

It no longer matters, I've just intentionally cancelled the deal.

I made the deposit on Friday. I am required to pay the rest in 3 days.

I called twice in the last 3 days and he told me he was busy at some car show and for me to call back later.

BUT During the last 3 days, I have emailed the guy twice. I did not get the responses I asked for: where is the car exactly and are YOU the owner on the title?

I DID get him to tell me that I'd have to pick up the car within a somewhat narrow timeframe after 5:30 PM (near the time the sun goes down - hard to see what I'm buying) tues-fri.

I told the guy I would call today at 3 PM. Called at 3:25 - admittedly a little late, but I DID still call. Got a voice mail saying words to the effect of "I'm too busy to talk to you right now, I'm at [some stupid] Drag Race. Leave a message or email me and I'll call back later or text you."

THAT'S when I got royally pissed. My parents have been 100% against this deal from the start, and the pressure from them wasn't fun to deal with. But this guy's behavior makes me think they are right.

I emailed the seller (NOT the guy who allegedly owns the car, the "seller" just posted it FOR him) and said: "This deal is off and I want my deposit back or I'll file a grievance. I have asked simple questions and got no answers, and been put off 3 times. I have a great record as a buyer and if I buy a car I have the money to pay for it. I deserve to be treated better".

I had 3 days to make the final payment (ending today) but there's NO way I'll do that when

1. My parents think it's a BAD idea, and I have to LIVE with them.
2. The "owner" is being hard to deal with, and has given me nothing but delays.
3. I have bent over as far as I can, and I care to, to be patient and stay nice.
4. I am an honest buyer with the money in hand.
5. It would be way expensive to get the darn thing anyway. Better to buy local.
6. Money is hard to come by and I'm not risking another penny on a deal I have no real proof is legit.

I can see why no one else bid on the car.

Thanks for listening, everyone.

sounds like you should run from this deal no matter how good it may seem.

Hi guys,

I have to give the proxy seller guy some credit. I went out for the evening and when I got back there was already an email stating that my deposit had been refunded. The seller left me a note apologizing for the inconvenience.

So I agreed to the cancellation, but I think it fair to apologize (there and here) for popping off like that. That's one thing I can use, is a MAJOR patience adjustment. I mainly felt unfairly put off, and it's also scary buying a car based on 2 blurry pics, and not being truly sure I'll ever see it, or get something less than what I paid for.

next time you see a car for sale see if another member lives close enough to go look at it for you.

I travel alot so if I can check out a car for someone I will.
what kind of car was it?
